Er ist oft hier, sagt er, für ihn schlägt das Herz von Marseille unter anderem auf solchen quirligen Märkten, den „march’s populaires“. Er ist äußerst skeptisch, was die neuen Verheißungen, die großangelegten Versuche zur Modernisierung und Image-Verbesserung der Stadt betrifft. Die Marseiller Eliten sind verzweifelt darüber, dass das Stadtzentrum nach wie vor vom Volk, von der Unterschicht, dominiert wird. Denn die Innenstädte heute, das sieht man in Paris und anderswo in Europa, sind Vorzeige-Vitrinen und keine Orte des Alltagslebens. Hier gibt es Märkte fürs einfache Volk, die gut funktionieren, die keine Werbung brauchen wie die neuen Einkaufszentren. Aber man will sie nicht! Und da liegt glaub ich der Kern dessen, was in Marseille passiert. Es ist das, was sie „Renaissance“ nennen, beziehungsweise „Rückeroberung“, wenn sie etwas ehrlicher sind. Es geht tatsächlich um die Rückeroberung eines Terrains, das ihnen so nicht gefällt. […] Gemeint ist: die Rückeroberung der Innenstadt durch sozial Bessergestellte. Shopping Mall statt March’s Populaires.

Suffering from underinvestment and mostly cut off from the tram and metro networks, the cités are hived off in the north – a stark division that rules the city. “It’s the world capital of apartheid,” says Nicolas Mémain, a self-proclaimed “gonzo urbanist” who gives walking tours of the brutalist postwar architecture. ‘There’s no boundary outside of which to put poor people’ ... But the cités are far from out of sight. The difference with the rest of France is that Marseille’s poorest housing blocks are still inside the city boundaries, which are strictly constrained by the sea and the mountains. “In Paris, the poorer you are, the further you live outside the periphérique [ring road] – it’s a centrifugal-centripetal opposition,” says broadcaster Jonathan Meades. “Marseille is more like Britain in that the social housing is spread around, and there’s no boundary outside of which to put poor people.”
