According to traffic engineering expert M.N. Sreehari, there has been an alarming rise in the number of cars. The number of four-wheelers is increasing by 15 per cent every year. This is nearly the same rate of vehicular growth as in the national capital region, Delhi. "This has to be stopped immediately," he says. Two-wheelers are no exception; their number has increased from 9.94 lakh in 2000 to 28.26 lakh in 2011.

Recent Strikes
Transport workers' strike (13. September 2012, no figures about duration or number of participants)
The unlimited strike called on Thursday by the Joint Committee of Karnataka State Road Transport Trade Unions has been showing effects across the State since Wednesday. The unions are opposing the unilateral wage increase announced by the managements of the road transport corporations (RTCs). Transport workers staged gate meetings and abstained from work beginning on Wednesday afternoon, affecting normal operations. Transport corporation officials admitted that over 30 per cent of services in Bangalore were affected. Buses were packed to capacity on Wednesday evening. Meanwhile, the government detained union leaders, in an attempt to thwart the strike. According to committee convener and KSRTC Staff and Workers Federation general secretary H.V. Ananthasubba Rao, 3, 8 and 16 leaders were arrested in Peenya, Tumkur and Maddur, respectively. About 400 more strike organizers were transferred and another 5,000 union members warned by management.
